Shropshire ’s Heritage Range
Our Heritage range is selected from traditional seed varieties, some of which have been grown for many centuries, in kitchen gardens and allotments.
Heritage Cheltenham Beetroot
This is a traditional English variety that has been around since the late nineteenth century. Paler in colour than traditional varieties, Cheltenham beetroot is long and parsnip-shaped and when cooked and has a delicate, sweet flavour.
Fenland Grown Heritage Golden Beetroot
Once popular in Victorian kitchen gardens, Heritage Golden Beetroot is highly seasonal, requiring the longer sunshine hours of summer before reaching maturity in early autumn. It has a delicate, more subtle and less earthy flavour than its ruby relative.
Here at Shropshire’s we infuse freshly cooked slices in white wine vinegar and orange blossom honey – they’re different and delicious in salads!
Heritage Fenland Grown Celery
In Victorian times, Heritage Fenland celery was specially grown in the region for the Christmas market. Also known as ‘white’ or ‘winter’ celery, it was grown using a traditional method of banking up the black Fen soil around the plant to protect it from frost and to ‘blanche’ it (which is how it became known as white celery). This method gives the celery a unique ‘nutty sweet’ taste.
